And right now, as you read this, we are at the beginning of this period: Mercury retrograde began on February 18 and will last through March 10. 

But what does Mercury in retrograde really mean?

As the name suggests, it means the planet appears to move backward (east to west instead of west to east) when viewed from the Earth. 

According to astrology, Mercury retrograde can adversely affect specific areas of your life. This is because it is believed that Mercury affects communication, travel, and technology. 

So when Mercury is in retrograde, things can go askew. This can slow down productivity and affect relationships, and hence have an empowering effect on your moods, which in turn, can affect appetite and cravings.

According to the food delivery service Doordash, there is a spike in orders of certain types of foods – all of which are comfort foods, during this time.

These Doordash findings made us look into our delivery and POS data at Mint Indian Bistro from the past few years, and we saw similar trends. While most Indian food is in the “comfort foods” category, we did see a trend toward more orders of curry, carbs, and desserts. (By next year, we will have some data for Divine Dosa & Biryani as well).
